Sunday 26th July, 1-3pm, sees the UK Official debut of the new Afrobeats Chart.
It seems an age since Fuse ODG and D’Banj burst onto the UK scene but recent times has seen the Afrobeats genre grow at a rapid pace, with 2019 being a significant year for Afrobeat artists having songs featured in the UK Top 40.
Who can forget the global smash ‘One Dance’ by Drake featuring Wizkid – the UK’s longest running No.1 single of the millennium, spending 15 weeks at the top spot.
It’s not only Wizkid who has found global success, but the likes of J Hus, Burna Boy, Young T & Bugsey, NSG, B Young, Kojo Funds and Master KG. The aim of the new Official UK Afrobeats Chart is not only to showcase these artists but to deeper explore the genre, many of which are still grassroots acts.
Mark Strippel, Head of Programmes at BBC 1Xtra says of the chart; “1Xtra has been committed to championing the Afrobeats scene since our formation and we’re excited to support the launch of the first-ever UK Afrobeats Chart. This is much-needed and long overdue. We’re proud to be a part of history.” While rising Nigerian star Oxlade says he feels amazing to be part of history and as one of the important people elevating the genre to the world stage – “…an exciting time for Africa!”
