Emotional messages of love and admiration poured across the web, as Radio 1 host Annie Nightingale sadly passed away yesterday, following a short illness.
Annie joined Radio 1 back in 1970 as their first female Dj, and carved out a career of seeking out underground music and artists, bringing them to the forefront. She also inspired and opened the doors for many other females to follow her route and become DJs in a male dominated landscape.
For 50 years Annie remained on Radio 1 becoming their longest serving presenter, and at the age of 83 – she was still presenting her show Annie Nightingale presents, the last show being December 2023 where she signed off with “lots of love from me to you.”
Dj Spoony wrote, “Annie, always so cool, so classy, so on point. One of the real and true broacasting legends. Thank you for everything.”
Zoe Ball took to X to express her respect, “Heartbroken to hear the news. the original trailblazer for us women in radio she loved music like no other… and could out last any of us at the party, so grateful for all the love & support she offered me over the years. What a dame… rest well.“
