Earlier this month Musicvein Entertainment took the pleasure of inviting Tipitina to play at L’Oliveto in Rutland.
Usually accustomed to playing major jazz festivals and sophisticated Jazz Clubs like Ronnie Scotts in London, the small crowd of diners who came to enjoy the event were treated to a night to remember as Debbie Jones and Justin Randall gave a show stopping performance of their Tipitina hits.
Opening up with the colourful and swinging ‘Mardi Gras’ before slowing down the tempo and easing into ‘Something You Got’ – a song that’s guaranteed to always have me singing along like a diva. I adored their rendition of Amy Winehouse’ ‘You Know I’m No Good’ which had a slight Parisian feel to it, Debbie’s voice just magical as it was accompanied by Justin and his uber-impressive piano playing skills.
At times throughout the 90 minute set the duo would have you tapping your toes and jigging along in your seat, while at others Debbie’s heavenly voice could bring a tear your eye and lump in your throat as she brought home the messages of the song. ‘You Are a Blessing’ penned by Debbie and ‘Luisiana 1927’ by Randy Newman were two such moments when I saw a couple caught up in the emotion of the songs, wiping their eyes and smiling on through.
Don’t think for a second though that after those performances the night became sombre – Oh No, far from it – out of the bag came the old crowd pleasing favorites, Nina Simone’s ‘I Got Life’ and Irma Thomas’ ‘Fool Nobody But Me’ before ending on the biggest high with another Simone hit ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ which saw Debbie abandoning her guitar and joining Justin on the keys, the duo laughing and having such fun on the stage, resulting in a rapturous applause.
I most definitely want to book this professional, very talented and all round wonderful couple again in 2015.
