A couple of weeks ago I received an email from my friend hyped about a friend of his who was coming to play in town. Now, when Rick gets excited about someone, you know it’s going to be good and I definitely wasn’t disappointed when I heard the voice of Leicestershire born singer songwriter Nikki Pope!

Having made a brave decision at the age of 18 to move to the city of New York to further her acting career, the then actress and playwright struck gold when she had not one but TWO play entered into festivals! Following this success and a move to LA at 21, she met the influential producer Austin Bellow who would eventually navigate Nikki Pope towards her first EP ‘Electric Energy’.

‘Electric Energy’ received such rave reviews that people just couldn’t wait for the follow up – fast forward 2017 and Nikki has a surprise for her fans, ‘Karma Deja Vu’ the follow up EP is coming soon!

Musicvein caught up with Nikki ahead of her gig at the Firebug, Leicester to talk about her career and the new EP.

MV: You were an actress first and foremost, what was it that made you transition into being a singer?

NP: “To be honest I’ve always been a singer. At the age of 8 I had singing lessons and from the age of 13-18 attended Dupont Dance Stage School in Leicester. When I turned 18 I moved to New York to attend a drama school there and further my career – I can honestly say it was the best 3 years of schooling in my life! After graduating I went to live in LA for a few months and that was where I had a chance meeting with producer Austin Bello. He was really cool and from a band called ‘Forever The Sickest Kids’. Although he was really encouraging about me pursuing my dream of singing stardom, it would be another 8 years before I actually decided to do anything about it”.

MV: Wow that is a long time

NP: “Yeah at the time of our meeting I didn’t want to go into a studio and record a bunch of cover songs, I really didn’t want to run before I could walk. I wanted to be able to express myself through my own songs and in a way that I was passionate about. Sure I could have recorded a set of beautiful covers but that would just be a way of making quick money and would soon dry up. When I made the decision to meet with Austin in Viriginia, the time was just right, I had the fire, the drive and determination. I remember how we churned out 3 songs in 5 days! ‘Blue Lagoon’ first and the rest followed on”.

MV: What was your inspiration about making Karma Deja Vu?

NP: “Well after ‘Electric Energy’ was released, I never in my wildest dreams believed it would have done as well as it did, like ever! Everyone began to ask me when the album was coming out, there was just so much pressure, but after speaking with a few people – especially Larry Flick from Sirius XM (radio station) I decided I would release a further 2 EP’s before the main album.

I’m immensely proud of ‘Karma Deja Vu’, it’s built up of life experience and things I want to talk about, I can’t wait for you all to hear it”.

And we certainly will! Nikki Pope will be playing at the Firebug, Leicester, Friday 20th January from 8pm.
