Michael Malarkey - Leeds with Musicvein

Leeds, Brudenell Social Club was the place to be last Friday night, when Actor and Musician Michael Malarkey treated fans to a showcase of his debut album ‘Mongrels’.

It was the 5th night of an 18 date UK and European Tour but the nomadic artist showed no signs in slowing down.

Treating early fans to a relaxed Meet & Greet session, Michael answered questions about his career, the album and gave advice on getting ahead in the music business. Perhaps it was the strong pheromones coming from 40+ women in the room that kept Michael seemingly shy and reserved – a far cry from the amorous vagabond they knew and loved of his TV character.

Michael’s voice must have put me in a state of hypnosis as he totally threw me a curveball when I caught his monologue for Lemon Drizzle cake??? the females around me went into meltdown giggling as I looked on perplexed – side whispering to another beside me “What’s the joke?”, “No idea…just laugh” she replied!

Following the session Michael stuck around for a quick photo with everyone present before slipping away to allow his support act, Annabel Allum, to rock the house with her thrash guitar and snarling lyrics to new songs ‘Rich Background’, ‘Picture on Picture’ and old favourite ‘Tricks’ among other songs.

The night was truly special though when Michael arrived on stage with his band to perform a set of no less than 17 songs! Meandering through tracks from ‘Mongrels’, ‘Feed the Flames’ and ‘Knots’, the small captivated crowd clung to his every word.

Highlights for me were when he performed ‘Scars’, ‘Dancing In The Grey’, ‘Uncomfortably Numb’, ‘Mongrels’ and ‘I Just Want You’ – which could easily have been a U2 song – I hope he releases this one next, definitely a UK Top 40 hit! Michael even performed a brand new song he had recently written called, wait for it…Lemon Drizzle Cake! Once again came the sniggers regarding cake, once again I thought “Oh crumbs!”

The new song was actually a cool one entitled ‘Grave Racer’ – we’re not sure on any plans for its release yet but Musicvein will keep you posted on any news.

Tickets are still available to catch Michael Malarkey on the European leg of his tour – well worth going. Oh and if you ever get to the bottom of this Lemon Drizzle marlarkey, please please please let me know!
