“…If there is a chance in a million that you can do something, anything , to keep what you want from ending, do it…” Pauline Kael – American film critic.
Heeding to the words of American film critic, Pauline Kael, UK independent artist Damien Soul auditioned for US show America’s Got Talent.
But this isn’t his first auditioning gig, in fact in 2016 the Londoner got through to the Boot Camp rounds of UK’s X-Factor – which featured Honey G – but was cut shortly afterwards.
“I was gutted when I left X Factor UK, I’m a strong believer that everything happens for a reason but I just really wanted to show everyone what I could do you know. People who know me, know, but I just felt that wasn’t the end.”
Not letting the rejection deter him from his passion and drive for success Damien secured gigs in and around London, Leicestershire, Ireland and Eastern Europe. It was on a recent business trip to California that he heard about the AGT auditions in Morongo.
“The stars aligned for me recently, if I wasn’t here in California on other business I wouldn’t have heard about these auditions. I applied, got accepted so went along to see my fate.
The whole process was very quick, I literally walked into the venue, sat down with about 20 other contestants and it was all over and done with in around 30 minutes. When I did X-Factor UK that was a long drawn out process – there were hundreds of people there and it took a whole day!”
Reflecting on his performance Damien says; “I actually don’t know how I’ve done and whether or not the judges will put me through, it’s a waiting game till January! All I know is that I sang and performed from the heart – ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ by Sam Cooke.
This was a once in a lifetime experience for me but I intend to keep auditioning and doing my thing as many times possible – some people never get the chance, I appreciate every opportunity I’ve been given.”
As a seasoned pro at auditioning, Damien Soul has some sound advice for others going for their first auditions. “Singers, choose the song that comes to mind anytime someone asks you to sing, because that’s the song you know from the inside out – you don’t need to think about it you can just share the emotion of the song. Have self belief, passion and the will never to give up – that’s the most important traits to have. If you don’t succeed the first time, try again and again, eventually the planets will align and you will move on to the next stepping stone.”
