When genres frenetically collide, a mephistophelian tryst ensues – and that’s what we have with Pongo’s latest release ‘Uwa’.
Taken from the Angolan-Portuguese artist’s EP of the same name, the title track, meaning ‘step’ in Angola’s Kimbundo, sees Pongo interlacing the language with English lyrics to great effect.
Filmed on location in Dakar by French photographer Lou Escobar, the video shoot for ‘Uwa’ marked the first time Pongo returned to Africa since fleeing her native Angola aged just 8, to escape the country’s civil war.
‘Uwa’, the EP, follows Pongo’s 2019 debut EP ‘Baia’ which was supported by 6 Music and 1Xtra, and arrives just ahead of Pongo’s appearance at this years 6 Music Festival at Dingwalls, 5th March, alongside Girlband and Ghum.
If you don’t manage to catch the singer at the Festival, she will return for a string of headline shows in April.
