My daughter is an avid user of TikTok, forever throwing shapes in the mirror, perfecting routines those in the Hype House have created, but perhaps what makes me laugh the most is when I sing lyrics to the songs she’s busting a move to. “How do you know that song?” followed by a perplexed look as if to say – this song is new on TikTok so why do you know it?
I have to break it to her gently, the Matthew Wilder, ‘Break My Stride’ was a song I was stomping around to at a tender age and one I had never thought would see the revival day, but here we are!
Streamed over 1.6m times in the last fortnight alone, ‘Break My Stride’ has re-entered the Official UK Chart at 100, 36 years since it was first released!
Other oldies include ‘Big Fun’ from the musical Heathers (OK that one isn’t that old) and ‘U Can’t Touch This’ MC Hammer. But it’s not the oldies that Users bring back to the surface, new songs by artists flying under the radar are suddenly being pushed to the forefront as TikTok-ers video themselves doing the latest number.
I have to say, I’m finding TikTok a great way of discovering new and exciting artists, ‘Lottery (Renegade)’ by K Camp, ‘Vibe’ by Cookie Kawaii, ‘Say So’ – Doja Cat, ‘Roxanne’ – Arizona Zervas and my absolute favourite so far ‘Supalonely’ by Benee – I think I might have to get myself a secret TikTok account.
