With only 33 days left till Christmas Day, I thought I’d kick off the festive season with a review of Mary J Blige‘s first ever Christmas album!
‘A Mary Christmas‘ is just the present so many of her adoring fans have been waiting decades for and it does not disappoint. You won’t find classic Christmas songs peppered with jingling bells for effect or sped up for raucous merrymaking – No! What we have here from the Grammy Award winning Mary J Blige and David Foster, world renowned Producer and Chairman of the Verve Music Group, is something rather mellow and sophisticated. Songs that have been beautifully arranged and duets with some of the best vocalists around.
Mary teams up with the sensational Marc Anthony for ‘Noche de Paz’, broadway belle Barbra Streisand on ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’, the angelic Clark Sisters on ‘The First Noel’ and our very own pop princess Jessie J for ‘Do You Hear What I Hear”.
What I love about this album is the tenderness in which Mary sings on each track. She doesn’t attempt to take hold of the tracks and make them her own – with the exception of ‘Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer’ a jazzy, big band rendition which sees Mary thoroughly in her element – instead she presents each song to the listener in a humble way that encaptures the ear and warms the cockles of your heart. Think warm and cosy log fires burning in the evening, a glass of mulled wine in hand and this album sits perfectly in the background.
Due for release on Monday 25th November, this cracker of an album should be in every home for the festive season.
