Well kicking off the New Year as I mean to go on, the first live gig attended was put on by the ever popular George Simpson at the Noels Arms Pub – Melton Mowbray.
The once dreary Sunday afternoon’s in the small market town are now becoming quite popular since Jo Bowtell and Craig Langton took over the Noels Arms public house, offering live music events for their punters – though I’m sure it’s the interval’s ‘stinky’ cheeseboard which drums up the most business.
Thankfully George hadn’t nibbled any before his set to a full house and we enjoyed an afternoon/evening of his hits as well as renditions of loveable favourites from Ah-ha, Clean Bandit, Sixpence None The Richer and Frankie Valli (which had the whole pub singing and dancing along).
I knew the cheese board was going to be trouble during the interval for when George invited guests to the stage – drummer Adam Chambers (local PT instructor who I never knew could tap out a cool rhythm) and guitarist/singer Ray – there were guffaws, memory loss on lyrics and heckling! But this didn’t put a dampener on the occasion and rather made it all the more fun, even landlady Jo raised an eyebrow or two as she took to the stage to belt out two numbers by Alanis Morissette and Natalie Imbruglia.
The evening was rounded off with a solo George taking back charge and having everyone work off those Christmas mince pies.
George Simpson’s new album ‘Get On This Ride’ is due for release 16th Feb with an album launch party happening Fri 20th Feb – tickets still available from Melton Theatre (direct link to booking page)
For now I’ll leave you with his first video ‘The Bottle’ from the forthcoming – check out my review here
