10 Times Artists Went Sparring: Round 5 – Damita Jo Vs Ben E King

Following his departure from the Drifters in 1960, singer Ben E King wrote and released ‘Stand By Me’.

One of the greatest love songs of the 20th century, which inspired the 80’s film of the same title featuring the late River Phoenix, ‘Stand By Me’ went on to be recorded by Muhammad Ali, John Lennon and more recently performed by the Kingdom Choir at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s wedding.

Now in this series looking at answer songs, the previous listed have all been acrid come-backs but in the case of Damita Jo vs Ben E King, we see a shift in pattern.

Damita Jo‘s 1960 answer to King‘I’ll Be There’ is more an affirmation of love. It’s a beautiful female response and the two songs are a perfect marriage.

Now I’d have to call this round a draw.

What do you think of the two songs?
