So here we are with the final round of the series – 10 Times Artists Went Sparring but who will deliver the TKO, 2Pac or Biggie Smalls?
1996 and Junior M.A.F.I.A released ‘Get Money’ featuring Biggie Smalls and Lil Kim. The remix, which sampled Dennis Edwards ’84 track ‘Don’t Look Any Further’ was one of their biggest hits to date.
It’s no secret that 2Pac and Biggie Smalls were at war at the time and on hearing Biggie’s rap of the high life, money, women and reference to being Frank White (reference to the Christopher Walken‘s drug lord character in King of New York) – retorted with the hard-hitting ‘Hit ‘Em Up’ featuring The Outlawz.
Leaving no stone uncovered in one of the last century’s most explosive diss-tracks. 2Pac not only side-stepped most of the Junior M.A.F.I.A click to deliver blows on Biggie but quite frankly urinated all over their track. Using the same Dennis Edwards sample and dipping into the ‘Players Anthem’ by Junior M.A.F.I.A, 2Pac went pound for pound over Biggie’s rise to fame, their once friendship, his crew and relationship with Faith Evans. 2Pac having survived a shooting was out for blood when he released ‘Hit ‘Em Up’ and delivered the poison dart with his tongue and lyrics. Even the music video, mocked Puff Daddy, Biggie and Lil Kim.
The Biggie diss was in fact a B-side track to ‘How Do You Want It’, which made it to No. 17 in the UK Charts – Junior M.A.F.I.A failed to hit the Top 40 entering and leaving at No. 63
If ever there was a TKO where a response song totally wiped the floor of the original – 2Pac’s ‘Hit ‘Em Up’ would be just that one. Round 10 therefore goes to 2Pac.
